Valley of the Sun Escalation League Tournament this Saturday 9/14/2013

So we've come to the end of the build-up practice games and I have had a great time along the way.  My American army now stands at a cool 995 points and is ready to go.  I have met some great people along the way and am starting to feel like part of the miniatures community here in Phoenix.  So far my Bolt Action record stands at 2-3-3.  Not great, but not so bad as to make it not fun.  I've learned a lot and one of the wins and most of the draws have come in the last couple of weeks.  I'm getting better and making fewer dumb mistakes.  We'll see how the tournament goes!

700 pts. US Army v US Army "Training Exercise"

The two forces were comprised almost identically.  Strangely, the scenario ended in a draw.  Although, the other guy did manage to give a little better than he got.  Dang crappy dice I have.

Thank you 1LT Wilkes

Made it out to the Arizona National Cemetery on Sunday.  After a bit of searching in the afternoon sun, I was able to pay my respects to 1LT Wilkes and say thank you.

BatRep: Orks v. Dark Angels 750 pts.

Escalation League

Today marks the beginning of the Valley of the Sun Bolt Action escalation league.  It is set to run for six week, starting with 500 points.  100 points are to be added each week, finishing in September with 1000.  A 1000 point tournament will be held at the end.  Tonight is my first battle and will pit my fledgling US Army troops against some sort of German force.  I've got two lists prepared, so hopefully I will be able to give a good game.

Strange but True

Ok, so this is one of those weird sorts of things that happens to us all from time to time.  But it made me rock back in my chair and say "Weird!" so I thought I'd document it here.  I had previously decided to base my Bolt Action! troops on the US 29th Infantry Division.  There are a few reasons for my decision, but I won't go into them here.  For the past few days, I'd been doing a little research on the 29th looking for pics and unit markings, etc.  This morning I was trying to find pics of armor and other vehicles attached to the 29th in order to get an idea how to model them (I have a 1/48 Tamiya Sherman on order).  I learned the 747 Tank Battalion was attached to 29ID on D-Day.  Surprisingly, there appears to be little material readily available on 747 Tank Bn, considering the degree of engagement of 29ID.  Anyway, there was a book self-published in 1982 by 1LT Homer D Wilkes titled 747th Tank Bn-APO230.  According to one statistic I saw, there may have been fewer than 3000 copies printed.  After a bit of hunting, I was able to find a copy for sale in California.  I promptly ordered it and wait anxiously for its arrival.  Now comes the strange part.  Realizing the likelihood was slim, I began to wonder if Mr. Wilkes might still be alive.  A quick internet search revealed that, sadly, Mr. Wilkes died in 2001.  He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona - about a mile from where I live!  Weird!  I plan on paying my respects 1LT Wilkes - and bringing my copy of his book.

Face Painting

FINALLY starting to make some progress painting faces.  I've struggled a long time with them and feel that this one is at an acceptable level.  Now, to just get better!

Independence Day 2013

Finished my 2nd batch of 3 tactical marines assigned to Squad Yariel.  Quite happy with a tiny addition to the marine armed with flamer.  Photos up soon.

Current projects

I've got four projects going right now.  Three are getting daily attention while the fourth is sort of on the back burner for now.  I'm painting a squad of tactical marines for my Dark Angels as well as building a squad of terminators from left over bits and Black Reach torsos.  I am also working on my first U.S. Army figures for Bolt Action!  And currently languishing (though not for that long, really) are my new Tomb Kings.  Check their respective pages to see more.

Let's get started . . .

Hopefully these pages will serve as an adequate repository and journal of my gaming and modelling experiences.
